Staying connected in an increasingly digital world: Digital literacy program for seniors

We live in an increasingly digital world.

Although digital solutions have supported advancement in many industries and our personal lives, it can leave some of us feeling isolated. As identified by Policy Horizons Canada in 2018, this is contributing to the emergence of an asocial society where more people are feeling disconnected and isolated from their communities. Remaining connected with loved ones and our communities can become even more challenging as we age due to factors such as geographical distances, transportation and mobility challenges, health concerns and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.

When COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and it is once again safe to visit, Celebrate Our Differences will be delivering free, interactive digital literacy workshops with seniors living in the Nanaimo Regional District area, as well as communities on the Sunshine Coast and Gulf Islands. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Until then, we’ve created an online introduction to digital literacy to support seniors in learning about digital literacy from the safety of their homes. Staying connected in an increasingly digital world: Introduction to digital literacy for seniors is free and available to all. This introduction to digital literacy can be viewed by individuals remotely, as well as used by groups that are part of the same COVID-19 social bubble. Topics include:

  • Ways to stay connected

  • Safety and fraud awareness

  • Lifelong learning

If you are an organization or individual interested in booking a free workshop in your community when it is once again safe to do so, contact us at: connect@celebrateourdifferences.com
